Truckee River Conditions By Mountain Hardware Sports

As of May 12, 2022

WATER CONDITIONS

The Truckee River is running higher than usual with all of the recent precipitation we have received. The snow hasn’t changed too much of the water clarity, but anglers will notice it is slightly off color. The upper section of the Truckee River is flowing at 200 CFS, the Glenshire section is flowing at 323 CFS, and the flows below Boca are around 840 CFS.

FLOWS:Tahoe City 199 CFS, Glenshire 318 CFS, Martis 543 CFS, Farad 983 CFS

TIPS FOR THE WEEK

With the higher water levels, there is not a lot of dry fly fishing happening on the Truckee River right now. Anglers should focus on deep water nymphing with a lot of split shot to keep the flies down, or they can try their luck streamer fishing. Indicator nymphing or euro nymphing seem to be best tactics though.

SUGGESTED FLIES

Pheasant Tails, San Juan Worms, March Brown patterns, Bird’s Nest, and Rainbow Warriors

LITTLE TRUCKEE RIVER

WATER CONDITIONS

The Little Truckee River has had great flows so far this spring. At 197 CFS, flows are higher than normal right now which helps this fishery a lot. The higher flows usually push more fish out of the lake and into the river because the flows are high enough for them to feel protected.

FLOWS: Between Boca and Stampede 197 CFS, Above Stampede 205 CFS

TIPS FOR THE WEEK

Anglers should be nymphing with an indicator to stay of the bottom of the Little Truckee River. The bottom of the Little Truckee River still has some algae and unwanted debris that can dirty up your flies. Anglers can find most fish in the deeper water. Fish can also be found in the riffles, but right now, focus on the deep pools near rocks. There is also some sporadic dry fly towards the lower part of the Little Truckee River during the warmer parts of the day.

SUGGESTED FLIES

Zebra Midges, San Juan Worms, Tungsten Jigged Stonefly Nymphs Size 14, Sweet Pea Baetis Size 18 or other small baetis patterns
